Prescribed Burn for Habitat Restoration

Northeastern PennsylvaniaForestry Mowing & Burn-Prep · Native Habitat Restoration & Preservation

A controlled burn run inside mechanically cleared firebreaks — resetting an overgrown field and triggering native regrowth within weeks.

  • A low flame front burning through brush across a field, heavy smoke rising past two pines, unburned grass in the foreground
  • Blackened, ash-covered ground still smoking under pines, with green ferns and grass along the unburned edge
Fern and grass already green at the edge of ground that is still smoking.

With the firebreaks mowed in, a prescribed burn does what no machine can: it resets an overgrown field, recycles nutrients into the soil, and clears the seedbank for native grasses and forbs to come back.

Fire is a restoration tool, not just a clearing one — within weeks the burned ground is already pushing new green growth where dense brush stood before.
